Newport Beach is a small city in Orange County, California. It was originally called Newport, but changed to its current name in 1907 when the town became part of the newly created Irvine County. The population of Newport Beach was 31,816 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Newport were Spanish explorers and missionaries who came ashore on July 24, 1776, while sailing from San Francisco Bay towards Monterey Peninsula. On November 6, 1889, as part of then-Governor Manuel Carrillo's "Welfare Plan" for Southern California's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) residents and others identified as "priority refugees", Mayor James Hylan announced that all citizens over 21 years old living within 3 miles (5 km) of downtown would be allowed to vote in an election held on December 5th. Voters Inaugurated Mrs. Anna Mancini as the first female mayor of any incorporated city or town in California on January 1st 1890." In 1906, with its population now numbering 31,816 people based upon2010 census data , Newport Beach became one of only a few cities in United States to have a women mayorship when Anna Mancini was elected Mayor; she served until her retirement effective January 1st 2020
Newport Beach was founded on August 25, 1892 by J.P. Morgan and his partners W.B. Dodge and H.L. Mencken as a resort town in Southern California's Newport Beach Peninsula. The name comes from nearby Newport Harbor, which is still the town's primary commercial District today and home to many of its businesses and residents. The original town site was bounded by Fourth Street on the north, State Avenue on the east, Vine Street on the south, and Marine Drive (now Laguna Boulevard) on the west. The original industry that helped support Newport Beach was fishing, but this began to decline after World War II when there became more developed areas for export in California’s Central Valley with better opportunities for investment elsewhere in the United States. However, during the 1970s new industries began to grow at Newport Beach thanks to an influx of refugees from Northern Ireland who were fleeing violence there; this led to some redevelopment of old warehouses into housing units along Second Street (then called "The Strip"). In recent years development has slowed as stricter zoning laws have made it difficult for developers to build high-density housing near open beaches such as those found at Newport Harbor without also building significant amounts of associated infrastructure such as a hotel or shopping center adjacent to them
