A ferry from Laguna Niguel crossed the straits between mainland Southern California and Santa Barbara County four times per day during the 1800s; these ferries allowed travelers between those areas and San Diego to reach points along the ocean coast before continuing on to Tijuana or Mexicali. During World War II, many veterans were brought up here for work at Navy yards in Monterey Peninsula while they waited for orders back home; some remain local historical figures such as Admiral Chester Nimitz (a resident) or First Lieutenant Arnold Schwarzenegger (he grew up down the street from then-Senator Barack Obama). The post-war boom brought more people into town but also led to more subdivisions; today much of NewportBeach still feels devoted to its single-family housing stock dating back to World War II era demand for military personnel near major naval bases throughout Southern California."
