In 1850–1851 he made two trips to what is now Newport with his rig to try to find oil shale but failed because of lack of weather conditions. In 1862 James Wolk patented an idea for developing a new method for extracting petroleum from coal that he named "Wolk's Process". A large refinery had been established at Leland in Pasadena by Dickenson Oil Field Associates (DFOFA) by 1915 but due to World War I it closed down and did not resume production until 1922. This event led to increased production from smaller refineries throughout Southern California and led directly to Newhall's decision to build a much larger refinery on top of San Pedro Bay south of Los Angeles instead of nearer cities like Pasadena or Long Beach because they could get their product into greater numbers at lower prices than they could if they produced it closer to home where transportation limitations would have precluded them from reaching market saturation points needed for price discovery and then selling products back out at high levels against competitive pricing pressures brought about by other local companies operating within their own profiled marketsplaces). On December 12, 1892, the first post office in Newport Beach opened. The original building was a small frame structure on the corner of Third and Vine Streets. It was replaced in 1904 by a larger facility that is still standing today. In 1907, the population of Newport Beach reached 10,000 people. In 1912, the city annexed neighboring Santa Monica and formed a new city government with its own mayor and police officers. In 1922, Newport Beach became an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council system. In 1944, during World War II, the United States Navy built two airfields in Newport Beach – North Coast Air Station (then known as Hollywood Airport) and Naval Air Station Seal Harbor (now Edwards Air Force Base). North Coast Air Station was used for fighter planes while Naval Air Station Seal Harbor became home to bombers and bombers crash landings during World War II. After World War II ended, Naval Air Station Seal Harbor closed down and it was converted into an airport serving only commercial airlines until 1978 when it reopened as Newport/John F Kennedy International Airport.Today it is one of the largest international airports in Southern California
