By 1914, it boasted a population of around 100 people and was looking to become a major center for maritime trade in Southern California In 1931, Mayor Thomas Murchison designated Newport Beach as the site for the world's first municipally owned airport which would serve as a main regional airport serving both Southern California and nearby Riverside County On July 1, 1932, the original Newport Beach Harbor opened with its first commercial traffic when American Airlines Flight #1 arrived from San Francisco
