After the war, most of these bases closed down or were sold off to other municipalities; only Naval Air Station Miramar continued to be active until 1988 when it also closed down. Today, Newport Beach remains one of Orange County's most vibrant communities with traditional small town feel despite its large metropolitan areaicity rating (the metropolitan area includes Anaheim and Riverside).
The city of Newport Beach started as a small logging town on the bay in 1887. It grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its strategic location at the mouth of the Santa Ana River. The city was named for George Washington "Pete" Newport, second president of the United States. In 1915, Newport Beach submitted an application for incorporation as a city and was accepted. The first mayor was J. Leo Gibson and the first City Council were elected in 1916. As Newport Beach continued to grow, it needed more land to build onto and in 1922, annexed part of Rancho Santa Margarita which totaled . The annexation created a new urban area with a population of over 100,000 people by 1930. In 1933, Mayor Orville Halsey built what is now known as City Hall on DonatellO Drive which served as both government offices and a home for then-Mayor Halsey’s family until 1978 when they moved into their current home on DonatellO Drive. In 1942, during World War II, Newport Beach became one of only three California cities to participate in the V-E Day commemoration parade along Ocean Boulevard (the others being Los Angeles and San Diego). On July 4th 1945, during WWII's atomic bombing of Hiroshima, an estimated 50% of all homes within about 10 miles radius were destroyed by bombs dropped from American fighters over Japan; these bombings killed thousands of civilians and damaged or destroyed many other buildings throughout Hiroshima that year alone including City Hall building No., 5 Kenji Nagata Place #2 (now called Honda Center), Yamato Nishioka Building no., 2 Chuo-ku Yokohama Municipal Office Building Annexe 1 & 2 (now both NHK Broadcasting Tower), Kogyo Shukakuha Tower no., 3 Okuma Drury Place #1 (now Mitsubishi Electric Tower) Onauguration day(May 25th 1959)of new Mayor: James Ewing Onauguration day(July 4th 1945): City hall Bombing
