Newman is home to two churches- First Baptist Church (founded 1888) and Second Christian Methodist EpiscopalChurch (founded 1954). The old post office building still stands on Main Street adjacent to Stowers Elementary School; it served as a local movie theater until it burned down in 1984. Mt Whitney High School closed its doors for budgetary reasons in 2013 but reopened under new ownership that same year under the name Holy Cross Academy for Boys/ Girls; it currently serves as one of only two high schools open exclusively for girls in Mono County .
