The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Newman was James Fenton in 1847. A post office called Nevin was established in 1849, and the name change to Newman in 1861. The first store opened in 1865. There were only 10 residents when it became part of Kern County on January 3, 1907. The community developed around its two schools: Newman School District No. 1 (established in 1916) and Newmans High School (opened in 1922). The school district merged with the Kern County Unified School District on July 1, 1957; that merger left Newman as the lone remaining school district within Kern County-although it has since rejoined other districts within Kern County through mergers or separate annexations. Newman is located at . According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,564 people, 839 households, and 714 families residing in the town. The population density was 57 people per square mile (23/km²). There were 912 housing units at an average density of 28 per square mile (11/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White European American and 0% Native American; Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2%of the population
Newman was founded in 1887 by the Reverend Dr. Edwin Newman and his wife, Emma. The Newmans were Episcopalians who came to California from Connecticut. They purchased a ranch on the banks of the San Joaquin River in what is now Stockton. In 1889, they built a small chapel on their property for services of adults and children. In 1903, they moved to their current location on Dixon Street near Sacramento Street. Edwin Newman died in 1928 and Emma Newman continued to live there until her death in 1966.
