Newman, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It was founded in 1853 by John Newman and his wife Lucy. The town has a population of about 1,200. Newman was named for New Englander Nathaniel Newman who had come to Northern California as part of the Gold Rush in 1849. The Newmans were farmers and ranchers who owned several thousand acres (1,000 km²) of land in what is now Contra Costa County. They also built a few other small towns around their farmstead before they relocated to Newman in 1853. John Newman died in 1865, but his wife continued to live there until her death in 1902. She is buried at the old First Presbyterian Church Cemetery located east of Newman on Highway 99W. Lucy married second and lived out her life here until she died in 1951. The new church rebuilt on the same site as the old church was dedicated on November 10, 1955; it is called the "Lucy-John Newman Chapel."
Newman, California was founded on November 6, 1846 by James H. Newman and his wife Anna Maria. The new town was named for Anna Maria's father-in-law, Nathaniel Palmer Newman. Newman was from Vermont and had come to thegold country in search of a better life. He found it in what is now Southern California, and he started a small farm there. In 1850, he married an American woman, Sarah Hickey. They had two children: James (1851-1941) and John Dickson (1853-1927). In 1865, Newmans moved their family to San Bernardino County where they continued to make their home until their death in 1941.
