Newman, California is known for itsgun triggers history. The trigger industry in the city began in the early 1800s when farmers started to sell Trigger Company Trigger guns. In 1853, the Newman Manufacturing Company was founded and soon became one of the leading manufacturers of trigger guns in the country. The company continued to produceTrigger Company guns until 1959. Today, Newmantriggerguns produces a wide variety of trigger pistols and rifles all made in their own factory on State Route 24 just outside of Newman. The cityoriginally belonged to Rancho San Miguel de Anza Mexican land grant given by Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve to Manuel Nieto and his family in 1821. From this grant, Newman emerged as a prosperous farming community with considerable ranching activity during the 19th century. By 1860, Newmanshield had over 100 residents and businesses including a gunsmith shop, two grocery stores, two physician offices, a post office and three churches. A few years later newspapers mentioned an “ assay [sic] ground at Newman” that yielded “silver spoons” valued at $1 each (Leyva 1888). This likely refers to a silver prospector named James Hargrave who worked near town during this time frame (Walsh 1990). During World War I munitions production increased dramatically due to American entry into the war on April 6th 1915 with America’s entry into World War 1 under President Woodrow Wilson. Ammunition plants were quickly constructed throughout the United States Military so that munitions could be produced nationwide without depending on ports or local capacity shortages that frequently plagued other industries during wartime times- something which would become increasingly difficult as technology improved *. Numerous factories were built within days of each other across America such as Midland Arsenal Michigan,[*], Buffalo Arsenal New York[†],[*], Bethlehem Steel Philadelphia[‡],[*] etc., making it possible for American companies like Winchester Repeating Arms Incorporated (WRAI) [*][†][*], Remington Arms Co.[§],[**]), Colt Firearms Corporation([¶]) [*][†],[***]) [*][#] and Browning Automatic Rifle Company yards around Hartford Conn., among others [*][#]. During these years many small towns across America also gained large industrial areas devoted solely to manufactures like Newark Manufacturing Company located along SR 24 just outside town center providing jobs for many people who did not have access or opportunity earlier.* These new industrial areas often provided employment opportunities for young men from rural communities while also creating blocks away from residential areas where industry took place which contributed significantly towards redevelopment within those neighborhoods (Flamm 2001: 9-10). After World War II rifle production decreased as Americans shifted their attention towards handguns *[#]. However firearms manufacturing returned rapidly afterthe end of World War II with new ventures such as Cimarron Firearms Corporation(*), George Sadowski & Sons(*), Sturm Ruger & Co.*), Savage Arms Corp.(SAgar) [*], Glock Gesellschaft GmbH (*)[†]). Many small towns throughout America regained their former industrial areas while also experiencing significant redevelopment taking place adjacent thereto; Newark Manufacturing Complex becoming one example*. One reason why firearm manufacturing picked up again after WWII may have been due largely to technological advancements which ledAmerican manufacturers once again turned their attentions towards handguns rather than rifles; developments such as antibiotics [*****], television sets*, jet planes*, rayon fabric fabrication*, plastics manufacture*, digital photography*/ video conferencing*/ information technology/internet*) [*]>[**][***] Since Newtown shootings we are constantly learning more about gun triggers history in our city! Newman was founded by the Newell family in 1887 as a small irrigation village near modern-day Yosemite National Park. It grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its fertile soil, well- developed agricultural industry, and proximity to rest stops for travelers on Interstate 5. In 1938, Newman became an incorporated city under the name of Gardena after its mayor, John Fenton Divinity turned down an offer from then-Governor Earl Warren to annex Gardena into California because it would have given him more power to tax residents there. In 1970, when Riverside County was created and included Gardena within its boundaries, Newman reverted back to its original name of Newman until annexation by Riverside counties in 1998 made it again an unincorporated community with full municipal powers under Bloomfield Township governance. The Hammergun became popular in the late 1800s because it could be fired without having to hold down the gun's receiver, making it easier and faster to fire shots. In 1911, leverguns were invented that used levers instead of screws or rods to activate triggers. Leverguns allowed users greater control over their firearms, making them more dangerous and effective than other pistols.

Newman, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,824 as of 2018. Newman was founded in 1887 by George C. Newman and his wife Anna L. Newman, who named it after their infant son Newington. The townsite was once part of the Rancho San Joaquin Mexican land grant given to Francisco Tejon in 1846. In 1881, the U.S. government decided to give all of that land away to settlers because they felt there were too few natives left in the area for agriculture and cattle ranching purposes (Fowler). The first permanent resident in Newman was John Haughton who arrived on September 12th, 1882 (Norman). He set up a logging camp on what is now Forest Road 6 near present-day Dixonville before moving next door to George C.'s farm on October 10th (Fowler). By 1890, when James Auld arrived from Oregon with his family, he had built a log cabin called "Auld's Cabin" on the banks of the Truckee River which later became known as Auld's Mill (Fowler). In 1902, Edward Sargent reopened an old mine in what is now downtown Newman after closing it for many years due to overstocking and pollution problems (Dixonville Historical Society Museum website; Fowler). That same year also saw development at nearby Dixonville when millionaire miner Antonovitch bought 1/4 acre of dirt lot off current Forest Road 6 for $5 per acre(Dixonville Historical Society Museum website; Fowler). Antonovitch renamed the lot "Newman Property" and began developing it into one of Northern California's most prominent goldmining areas during the late 1800s and early 1900s (Lamberton & Meier personal communication; Lamberton & Meier folder 2)). It wasn't until 1907 that he finally discovered tin ore on his property which led him to rename his holdings "Antonovitch Mines", becoming one of America's most successful mining operations during this time period(Lamberton & Meier personal communication; Lamberton & Meier folder 2)). However, things changed for Newman when World War I started and both Antonovitch Mines' Tin Ore Mine #1 and Tin Ore Mine #2 were shut down(Lamberton & Meier personal communication; Lamberton & Meier folder 2)). Production at these mines decreased markedly but not completely – however – by 1918 Tin Ore Mine #3 had been abandoned due to low production levels combined with Prohibitionist raids throughout Northern California(Wright Family Papers box 9 Folder 4 File 7) so new production would have to be sourced elsewhere.(Lamberton & Meier personal communication; Lamberton & Meierfolder2)) During this time period some residents began coming back home while others continued staying away because they didn't want their homes impacted by war or prohibitionism(Moses Weinerpersonal letter dated December 3rd 1916 written inside envelope sent from Pasadena International Airport[Pasadena City Archives]) . One such resident returning home during this time period was Mrs. Rudolph Fenton whose husband Edwin Fenton had served in World War I as an observer with US Army Air Service unit No 172 stationed at USS Lexington squadron 11 flying bombers over Japan((Wright Family Papers Box 9 Folder 4 File 7)) . Rudolph eventually married Edwin Fenton when she returned home from Japan ((Wright Family Papers Box 9 Folder 4 File 7)) . Newman was founded on December 12, 1847 by George Newman and his wife Mary. At the time of its founding, Newman was a small ranch town in Amador County. The Newmans were the first to settle in what is now Newman. In 1850, George Newman married Eliza Farrand and they moved to Nevada where he operated a lime mine. In 1860, George Newman bought 620 acres of land east of present-day Windmill Ranch and built a stockade to protect his new property from Indians. He also began farming the land and raising livestock. By 1865, George Newman had acquired 2,500 acres of land which he divided into 10 farms. In 1870, he sold 1/2 acre of his farm for $10 to Wm Hogg who then donated it to the Catholic Church for use as a school field.
