Today, Newman is a bedroom community for Fresno and has a population of about 2,500 residents. Newman’s history can be traced back to 1847 when Mormon missionaries arrived in what is now central California looking for a new home after leaving Nauvoo, Illinois. They found an area that would be perfect for their religion with rich soil and well-maintained forests. The Mormons built a small town here named Newman on December 4thof that year. In 1870, when Fresno County was created from part of Kern County, the new county seat was moved to Newman due to its importance as both a railroad terminus and political center at this time (Fresno had been without an official county seat since 1850). Today’s downtown core still retains some of the look and feel of this early years with businesses such as Humble Oil & Trading Company still present today along with several other historic buildings including the old courthouse which remains standing today (it burned down in 1923). Newman suffered through various tough times throughout its history including being sacked by Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48) and experiencing rapid population growth following World War II which led to increased infrastructure needs like schools, hospitals and more housing developments (most notably “The Newmans” – high rises built around 1940 which remain popular today among locals). However, despite these challenges over the years, Newtown has always managed to stay strong culturally and politically even if it does not have much physical infrastructure left today. For example, one popular local dish is called “Navy Dogs” – dogs cooked over an open flame with chili powder then fried until crispy – something that originated here at least two decades ago!
