In 1865, Dixon founded another gunsmithing company called Powers & Dixon which continued production of handguns until 1892 when it merged with George W. Dixon's son-in-law, Hiram Powers. Hiram Powers is considered to be one of the most accomplished gunmakers of his time and is credited with developing many important firearms including the Browning Rifle and Winchester Repeating Arms Company pistols. In 1889, Hiram Powers relocated his manufacturing operations from Newman to Springfield, Massachusetts where he continued producing firearms under his own name until 1903 when he merged with Colt Firearms Corporation to form Colt-Powers Corporation. This merger led to numerous changes at Colt-Powers Corporation including the introduction of several new models of handguns such as the Model 1911 pistol which became wildly popular and remains one of America's most successful handgun designs today.

Newman is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded in 1849 by James A. Newman and his wife, Catherine B. Newman, as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. The town was named for General John Newton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and led an American force against Mexico City's walls during that conflict. After the war, Newton purchased land near present-day Newman and built a cabin to live in. The new community developed slowly until 1885, when it received its first post office from Sacramento County. In 1916, Newman became the seat of San Joaquin County after it was created from part of Contra Costa County. By 1920, however, it had shrunk to its current size due to population growth in nearby Berkeley and Concordia Colleges;[1] since then it has been largely self-sufficient with only occasional assistance from the government.[2] Newman has experienced some significant changes over time: its first post office closed in 1916 (the last one opened up in Monterey),[3] incorporation as a city occurred only once (in 1968),[4] and most recently becoming an unincorporated ranch village following annexation by Fresno on January 1st 2019 (an event which also saw the opening of a new library).[5][6][7][8][9][10] The town is still home to many notable people associated with its history including James A. Newman himself,[11] Catherine B.
