Newman, California was founded on January 17, 1849 by James M. Newman and his wife Nancy. The town was named in honor of General George Washington Newman who served as a captain in the Mexican-American War and as United States Minister to Mexico City. The Newmans were land speculators who acquired about 100 acres of land near present-day Dixon for $6 per acre. They built a log cabin and started a small grocery store in what is now the town center. Newman’s Store operated until 1874 when it burned down. In 1898, the town became an incorporated place with a post office and three schools. It experienced growth during World War II when the military constructed several airfields around the area. However, during the late 1960s and early 1970s, population levels began to decline as new housing developments were built in nearby Davis and Petaluma Counties. Today, Newman is known primarily for its history – including its role in setting off California’s first firewood famine that helped start this state’s long dry season; being birthplace of Governor Ronald Reagan; being home to two important U2 tours; and hosting many notable events such as the Rose Bowl Game (January 1st), Super Bowl XLIII (February 6th), NBA All-Star Games ( February 14th through April 12th), Aspen Music Festival (April 20th) and Golden Globe Awards (January 8th).
Newman, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 33,671 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Bernardino County after Tustin and is part of the Inland Empire metropolitan area. Newman has a history dating back to 1853 when it was named for John A. Newman, an American labor organizer and leader in the early days of organized labor in Southern California. Newman was incorporated as a town on December 14, 1853, from portions of what are now Riverside and Corona counties. The original town site included all that remains today of Downtown Newman and three blocks east of Orange Avenue (now Playa Boulevard). At its incorporation, Newman had no telephone service or other amenities typical of towns of its size at the time. It took until 1857 for Newman to achieve municipal status with voting rights on October 11th by popular election against those located just north in Victorville along State Route 66 which later became known as "The Snake." In 1861 voters approved annexing neighboring unincorporated areas including Colton to form what would become renamed Riverside County; however, only 2% of the population within this newly created county lived within 10 miles (16 km) of downtown Newmans core business district. As part Of Riverside Countys Annexation Plan #1 on February 22nd 1865 – two weeks prior to Californias admission into the Union as a state – new streets were laid out northeast from City Hall Cemetery Cemetery thence south Commercial Street past City Hall Ferry Landing across Lake Hughes Drive then northwest Anza Road to North Park Avenue near present day University Ave.; finally southeast from North Park Avenue through present day Western Ave., past Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish Church before crossing into Arnold Schwarzenegger Presidential Library District following current Business Loop route skirting University Ave., terminating east at US-101/State Route 66 exit for El Cajon Border Crossing where trucks can still be seen loading and unloading goods onto and off Interstate 815
