Newman, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 941 at the 2010 census. Newman began as a small farming community on the banks of the Riveroza River in 1848. The town was platted in 1850 and became a railroad town. In 1902 it became an incorporated city. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Fresno and 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Stockton. The University of California at Berkeley is located in Newman. Newman was first settled by American Missionaries who arrived there in 1848 to found new missions along the Riveroza River just south of present-day Newman.[1] One year later they founded what would become known as New Mexico College (now UC Berkeley). Reverend John Capps served as its first president and laid out the town grid which included streets named for members of his family such as his father Isaac Capps, uncle James Capps, sister Sarah Ann Keyes, brother-in-law Levi Strauss and wife Anna Chapman Strauss[2]. A post office called Newman was established on January 6, 1850,[3] and remained open until it was discontinued on July 15, 1907 due to being too far from any centers of population within San Joaquin County; however it continued to be used for mail delivery until that time[4]. The town flourished during the early days of railroad travel because all goods had to be transported by wagon or stagecoach across country; thus businesses were able to get started quickly and generate some wealth from freight traffic alone[5][6]. By 1860 Newman had over 100 residents with six stores/factories including two blacksmiths, three saddlers/tailors, one tailor shop,[7][8][9] four groceries store(s), two feeders(s), two sawmills/smelters,[10] one millinery shop[11], one hotel[12], one doctor[13],[14], one bakery/cafeteria[15], several churches including First Baptist Church (later called Cathedral Bible Chapel)[16],[17],[18], several schools including New Mexico College School (now UC Berkeley)[19]; sixteen residences; twelve lots numbered 1 through 16; five water mains - Spring Creek (#1), Winter Creek (#2), Arrowhead Creek (#3), Los Alamos Creek (#4)[20]; four public baths: Newton Hotel #1 (later renamed Park Inn Hotel #2 after merging with another business run by Rev Elisha Arnold Costigan & son Alonzo Costigan & daughter Nora Costigan Arnold), Alma House #3 [21], Willows Homeopathic Hospital Building No 2 [22],[23]), Lovejoy's Hardware Store ([24]) civic center built between 1886-89 consisting of a large brick building on Main Street fronting Spring Creek which housed a library Annexed by Moorish Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion church also annexed forming Capitol Theatre Company Theatre company opened here November 3rd 1889 starring Mabel Howell opposite Edwin Booth played Drury Lane Players season tickets starting at $0 per week sold out soon becoming known as "The Cardinal" then changed October 14th 1890 when matinee show moved uptown to Regal Theater thenceforth "Newman's Own Playhouse" now Tony Gwynne Center for Stage and Screen arts having been home since 1915 before moving back into original building May 5th 2016 due to floods damage

This is why World War I was such a defining conflict; both sides were striving to find new ways to arm themselves with the most effective weaponry possible while minimizing casualties on both sides
