It is bordered by Stockton to the south, Modesto to the east, and Lake Placid to the north. Newman was founded in 1865 as alog station on what is now U.S. Route 99W between Stockton and Fresno. In 1875 it became an agricultural community with 120 farms and 1,500 people; it served as a stopping place for travelers going westward from Sacramento through the San Joaquin Valley. For many years Newman was known as "the bread basket of Kern County." In 1924 Newman incorporated as an unincorporated community under the name of Newmansville; it changed its name again in 1930 to honor Drs. Charles Wertheim and John Pemberton Newman (founder members of both hospitals). A new high school was built in Newmansville in 1937; it still serves as its local high school today. The first post office in Newman opened in 1870; it changed its name to Newton in 1925 after Drs Charles Wertheim and John Pemberton Newman donated land for a post office there. The current post office building was built in 1938 adjacent to Newton High School; it also serves as the town's municipal building today. Newman has two major shopping districts: one centered around Park Avenue South near downtown and another along Elm Street near Interstate 5 outside of town limits (although some stores are open inside town). Other commercial areas include several small businesses scattered throughout downtown including Banksy-themed shops such as "Shoeshine Alley" and "Paint N' Paint". Some other noteworthy amenities include two elementary schools (Newmansville Elementary School & Harding Middle School) which serve students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; one park (Lake Placid Park); five churches (Church of Christ, United Methodist Church, Lutheran Church - America, Baptist Church - USA et al); four public libraries (Alameda County Library System -wickner Branch Library & East Palo Alto Branch Library), two golf courses (Lakeside Golf Course & Northridge Golf Course), three tennis courts (.one court used exclusively by Newman High School girls' teams), several restaurants/cafes/bars/diner chains etc., nightlife with several bars/restaurants available within walking distance or driving distance depending on where you're looking for entertainment options/, a few dozen acres dedicated to agriculture which includes cornfields that produce hay crops, grapeseed plants etc., more than 350 residences with well-maintained homesites or newly build developments complete with all necessary features such as driveways/garages/yards etc.; about fifty businesses have been established since 2000 when township plans were developed for redevelopment area surrounding town center making this one of most active economic communities within commuting range from Fresno
