In the early 1900s, Newark was an agricultural town of about 60,000 people. The population grew to over 100,000 by 1925, thanks in part to the development of the Interstate Bridge and Tunnel System. The city’s growth caused a need for new housing, and so warehouses and other industrial buildings were built along Corydon Avenue. One such building still stands today – the Corydon-Moore Warehouse – which became known as “the soft gun case factory.” The soft gun case factory was founded by David Hogg in 1918. Originally it manufactured pistols for military use. After World War II, however, Hogg turned his attention to making soft cases for rifles and shotguns. In 1978 the Newark Firearms Company lost its charter from the California State Board of Firearms Regulation and ceased operations. In 1984 it was sold to manufacturer Hornady Ammunition Corporation who continued to operate it until 1991 when it closed down due to financial problems
