Newark, California is a city located in north-central Orange County, California. The population of Newark was 107,824 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim. Newark's history dates back to 1837 when it was founded as a small town by pioneers who arrived from New York City. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century and 20th century due to its strategic location at the crossroads of several transportation routes and its availability of land for development. In 1951, Newark was incorporated as a city and became one of the largest municipal cities in Southern California. Today, Newark remains an important center for economic development and education within Orange County and has become known for its high quality of life. The first settlers to move into what would become Newark were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1764 from Holland. After years of settlement and skirmishes with local Native American groups, English colonists established themselves along the east side of Santa Ana River in 1777. The first recorded reference to “Newark” can be found in a letter written by George Washington on December 3, 1787: “I am directed to inform you that I have just moved into this place [Newark] with my family & some guests from Virginia which I took up last fall; we are very much enjoying ourselves here without any trouble or molestation from either Indians or other people”). By 1800, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Newark proper (although parts of present-day Jersey City were included within the boundaries at that time). In 1837, pioneer Nathaniel Essex bought 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of Newark on Lakehurst Hill Road for $5 per acre ($20/km²). With this purchase he began construction on what would become one of America's earliest urban areas – an area that today includes almost all central downtown streets and blocks surrounding Union Station – making him one of the earliest developers in North America. Essex' purchase allowed him to build roads and buildings needed for daily life such as homes, stores, churches and schools; he also developed land around his new community for agriculture purposes (this area now includes much of downtown). It experienced significant growth during World War II as a manufacturing center for aircraft and shipbuilding. During the postwar period, Newark lost its status as a major city but continued to experience population growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of Berkeley and San Francisco.
