It was not until the late 1800s that shooters started to wear helmets with face shields in order to protect their head from debris and other projectiles. By 1910, most shooting sports were banned in the United States due to concerns about head injuries caused by gunfire. However, some elements of the shooting community continued to use firearms while wearing eye protection, such as competitive shooting events which took place between 1911 and 1949 without any helmet rule violations. The first rules governing how shooters should wear their helmets were promulgated during this time period. These regulations mandated that all shooters must wear a protective device known as a “beanie” or “hood” over their eyes while participating in competitive shootings events. This was done so that those who did not have propereye protection could no longer compete fairly and safely with those who did have it on. Since these early days when shooting sports were conducted without any regard for head injuries, different types of eyewear have been designed specifically for shooters in order to provide optimal vision performance at high levels of intensity and magnification (i.e., close up).
