In 1891, Newark's first optical store opened. The store was known as the Optical Exchange and was located on Broad Street in downtown Newark. The store was operated by Mr. and Mrs. John Schieffer who also published a monthly journal called "The Optician." In 1899, the store became known as the Newark Camera Company and later changed its name to the American Optical Supply Corporation (AOSC). In 1924, AOSC relocated to 15th Street and First Avenue in Downtown Newark. In 1954, AOSC merged with Catalogue Mart Incorporated to form Allied-Optic Corporation (AOC). At AOC, we continued to sell optical products through our online store until 2009 when we closed our doors for good. Newark also played an important role during the Gold Rush period because it was one of the few areas in California whereuggets could be found outside of central City like Sacramento and Stockton. Consequently, Newark grew tremendously as a mining town during this time period because miners needed access to transportation and resources that were difficult or impossible to find farther away from civilization. In 1857, Mayor Lorenzo Young organized a group of entrepreneurs to begin developing what is now downtown Newark with the goal of becoming an international financial center due to its proximity to both New York City and London. This development helped spur economic growth in Newark throughout the 19th century because it allowed businesses such as banks, warehouses, restaurants, hotels, and mills along with professionals such as engineers and architects access to valuable resources near downtown Newark without havingto travel far away or face difficulties finding alternate employment opportunities or housing stock within easy reach . During World War II, northeast Albuquerque (now Deming) was bombed by Japan on September 17th 1942 resulting in extensive damage including loss of life including many women and children who had nowhere else safe to go . The bombing destroyed much property within northeastern Albuquerque but left behind a massive Muni Metro station which still stands today across from Northeast High School . The Bombing has been called one among America’s Greatest Catastrophes . The combination of factors caused immense hardship for residents living adjacent thereto such as losing their homes; lack thereof access education; few job opportunities; displacementof entire families; lack thereof means for livelihood ; inability topurish themselves independently following hostilities; increased crime rates resultant from added instability ; community reaction characterized by participationin local day-to-day activities despite significant disruptions
