Newark, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 103,651 at the 2010 census. Newark is the fifth largest city in San Bernardino County and the second most populous municipality (after Riverside) after Victorville. Newark's history dates back to 1871 when it was founded as part of the Ontario township by Mormon settlers from Utah. It became an incorporated town in 1912. The city was named for George Washington Irving's birthplace on Long Island, New York. After several years of effort, Mora obtained title to 1 million acres of land east of Los Angeles known then as Southern California Mission Land grants from The Mexican Government through Alvarado Carrillo y Uribe on February 14th 1828 This area included all or parts of Orange County, Riverside County, Kern County (today’s Stanislaus County), Joshua Tree National Park (now Mojave National Park) and parts of Butte and Placer Counties adjacent to today’s Santa Ana City Limits In March 1831 Mora married Doña María del Valle Peralta who also owned Rancho Corralitos located about 6 miles north-west of present day East Orange Avenue between 10th Street NW and 12th Street NW From this rancho two towns were eventually established: one called El Monte while the other – Newark – received its name from Doña María del Valle Peralta’s husband George Washington Irving who had settled there before her arrival On October 15th 1830 President James K. Polk issued an Executive Order creating “A Commission To Explore All Possibilities Of Constructing A Canal Through northern Mexico For The purpose Of Commerce And Navigation With Spain And Other Countries” Membership went into effect on November 5th 1830 with Amherst Forbes serving as Chairman Work stopped abruptly due to lack of funding on December 15th 1830 after only four months despite American warmly welcoming Spanish Ambassador Francisco Irazú with plans for a canal route that would have connected American ports with Islas Canarias providing potential trade opportunities for both nations Although it was never built Projectiles such as those found at Fountain Hills are thought to be responsible for destroying any evidence attempted to create a canal over De Anza Valley during this time period although no direct evidence exists demonstrating responsibility there either projectiles may have been inadvertently left behind once abandoned or purposely destroyed during later rebuildings following conquest by Mexican Americagiven that much remains at sites still relevant today including ruins associated with earlier missions & settlements etc… Today approximately 8 miles south-east OF DE ANZA VALLEY lies El Monte whose namesake doña maria del valle pereala Sempreste served as director general indian affairs for alvarado carrillos y uribe viceroy adelantado during times he held power 1903-1905
