Newark, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. It was founded on October 15, 1869 by the merger of three villages: Newark, East Newark and West Newark. The population of the city was 70,682 at the 2010 census. It is situated on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay towards downtown and its namesake riverfront park offers views of both. The city is also home to Fairmont Pacific Properties and Oracle Corporation Headquarters. Newark had two previous settlements before its incorporation as a town in 1869: Meadowlands (now Livingston) on the opposite side of present-day Oakland from which it derived its name and Newark Township (now Richmond), which lay east of today's Hayward neighborhood. The first post office in Newark opened in November 1868; within a year it had been renamed for John D’Arcy Holmes, then US Senator from Rhode Island who served from 1865 to 1867 during the Civil War as a colonel in the Union Army under General Ulysses S Grant. In 1872–73 Congressman James Buchanan sent surveyors to explore land west of San Francisco Bay that would become part of what is now Contra Costa County; they discovered an area that included much of what is now Newark but also parts of today's Berkeley and Emeryville neighborhoods north of I-580 along with some sections currently located in Dublin/Weebey (northwest corner), El Sobrante (northernmost section), Antioch (southeast corner) and Hercules (southwest corner). On November 4, 1872, Governor George Haughton signed legislation creating Newark as an incorporated town with a population limit set at 25 people only – this act became known as "The 25 People Rule". 1 January 1889 saw what would be known as Wilmington’s devastating fire that destroyed over 80% or all buildings within 1 block radius including churches, hotels and schools; this event has been called one “of history” due to how large portions were rebuilt either completely or partially within 5 yearsigor following World War II when many aspects changed physical landscape due to war production needs plus aftermath effects such as high crime rates led to replacement housing development throughout NJ City & surrounding areas
