Newark, California is a city in San Francisco County, California. It was founded in 1847 by United States soldiers as the Military Town of Newark on land leased from the Russian Mission. The city’s first post office opened in 1850. Newark “changed its name to Newark after becoming one of the 12 original cities in California” on December 8, 1851. The City of Newark annexed portions of Yerba Buena and Mountain View Counties on January 1, 1893.
Newark, California is a city in Alameda County, California. The population of Newark was 342 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and it is located on the east side of San Francisco Bay and shares borders with Oakland to the north, Contra Costa County to the east, Hayward to the south and Berkeley to the west. Newark was founded by John James Audubon in 1852 as a military outpost on land granted by then-Governor Manuel Miranda. It became an agricultural center after being purchased from Mexico by American settlers in 1859. In 1924, Newark became an independent city under new management and governance following a referendum vote that approved incorporation into the City of San Francisco. On September 16, 1970, Newark merged with its neighboring cities of Richmond and Emeryville into one municipality for administrative purposes only; this merger created a single political entity which operated as both municipalities under one mayor and controller/manager government structure until November 1, 2003 when they were each reincorporated as separate municipalities again within their respective county limits. The history of Newark can be traced back over 200 years to when traders and travelers journeyed through this area during early nineteenth century trips across San Francisco Bay. In 1851 Captain David Dixon explored what would become Newark while en route from Sacramento to Yerba Buena Island; he named it after his hometown of Edinburgh – Scotland – because there was no other town nearby that could offer him lodging or food during his stay. A year later Lieutenant George Fenton established Camp Jackson on Steamship Pointe near present-day downtown Newark while traveling downriver from Sacramento; Fenton named it after General Daniel Webster who had helped defeat Mexican forces at Sutter's Fort two years earlier in what is now known as The Battle of Potomac Creek Bridge (now part of Golden Gate Park). In 1855 Colonel William Benton surveyed undeveloped lands comprising what would become Newark including present day downtown; he called these lands "the future site" for what would eventually become Newark due to their location between two major water bodies – Suisun Bay on the west side andSacramento River on the east side – providing easy access both inland and outlying areas like Livermore Valley and Dublin Hills overnight ferry rides accessible from Oakland or Albany without having to leave town proper! There are several stories about how Captain Dixon got his hands on this property: One story tells about him walking upslope along Suisun Beach looking for purchase price paper for his ship before finally finding someone who would sell him 1/4 acre next door - all he needed was $5 worth of clapboardalgia (a type of fiberglass used in making boats). Another story has Dixon’s crew landing their boat at Nob Hill Naval Shipyard so they could take supplies ashore before sailing back upstream where they found plenty of wood available - they didn’t need any power tools or nails so they just chopped off some trees with their paddles! Commodore John Wainwright also visited Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during this time period where he observed HMS Warrior undergoing conversion into a warship – he decided then that Wilmington should become America’s first naval port! In 1860 John James Audubon arrived in Northern California looking for his famous bird sanctuaries which are now scattered throughout Yosemite National Park; upon arrival he built a cabin nearpresent day Nuttall Street & Mission Road within sight but not too close to civilization because birds might mistake him for an animal! He continued enjoying nature much too much so instead built himself a home complete with outdoor kitchenette overlooking Suisun Strait where he cooked up some amazing dishes such as raw oysters Rockefeller style offshoot called “Gouda Bread & Butter Oysters Rockefeller” eaten fresh off our shoreline today!! Many people believe that Delaware Avenue—named after Captain David Dixon—came about because Audubon heard tell that people driving down Dover Street made funof him behind his house every morning!!! Finally we come back aroundto Captains Dixons Cabin icon which served many purposes over its lifetime including housingAudubon's parakeets until 1903 when they moved out onto Palace Way adjacent to present day MacArthur BART Station!!!!
