In 1876, National City was a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. It had a population of about 1,000 people and was home to one of the first optometric businesses in the area. In 1884, J.C. Hecht opened his business on 7th Street and National City Boulevard. The business became known as Hecht's Optometry and continued to operate until 1955. National City is also where William Friese started making telescopes in 1892. Friese's telescopes were used by astronomers at various institutions around the United States after he began manufacturing them in 1903. In 1870 David Calkins built the first cotton gin in what is now known as NationalCity Park next to where he lived until his death in 1895 (the current home of the California Historical Society). This gin produced high quality cotton that was exported all over America and Europe until World War II when it ceased operations because of prohibitionism legislation introduced by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his New Deal administration
