As a result, bank failures throughout California combined with resulting deflation led to mass unemployment in National City from 1943-1945 and 1949-1953; these years are also generally remembered for being one of the most difficult times in American history due to hyperinflation (the increase in prices without corresponding decreases in purchasing power).
