National City, California (formerly known as Los Angeles) is a city in Southern California and the county seat of San Bernardino County. The population was 931,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Southern California after Los Angeles, and the ninth most populous city in America. The area now known as National City was first occupied by Native Americans, including Mono Indians and Tongva Indians. A mission founded by Franciscans in 1795 called Santa Catalina Mission became an important cultural center for its time. In 1871, incorporation of what would become San Bernardino County followed; but it was not until 1912 that downtown National City began to take on its present form with construction of the former Bank of America building and other buildings around it. In 1924, part of Pasadena was detached from Los Angeles County to form its own independent municipality; Pasadena had a population of over 200,000 people at the time. However, when Hollywood began to grow rapidly after World War II and demand for housing outstripped available land in southern California, local officials decided to annex Pasadena back into Los Angeles County so that more property could be developed for housing. This decision backfired; because annexation increased pressure on county coffers to provide services such as public education which were not well funded by the new municipality’s coffers, crime rates soared and government revenues declined. By 1973-74 only 10% of all revenue came from tax assessment fees alone while spending was greater than total revenue due largely to functions such as Streets & Roads which were outsourced to private companies In response to this situation leaders within both jurisdictions worked together - led by then-Mayor Ruben Renteria - culminating in Measure R being passed during November 1976 which reined in municipal spending while also providing $10 million towards infrastructure projects This event kickstarted what has been described as “the golden age” for National City with significant redevelopment taking place throughout downtown leading up until today where nearly every block east or west of I Street has at least one business or apartment complex built since 1984 .
National City was a small town in San Joaquin County, California, located on the right bank of the Sacramento River. It was founded in 1849 by John Sutter and named for his friend and mentor, United States President George Washington. The city's growth came during the Gold Rush of 1851-1852 when many people from National City traveled to nearby Sacramento to find riches in what is now California. The population of National City peaked at 910 in 1860 but began to decline after that. By 1870, it had only about 200 residents. A post office called National City was established in 1850, and until 1865 it served as the only town within San Joaquin County. In 1865, National City became part of Uniontown Township which also included Richmond (now Redding), Capitol Heights (now Martinez), Sleepy Hollow (now Davis) and other small towns. In 1870, Uniontown Township merged with Placer County to form Mono County. From then on, National City gradually lost its importance as a community and slowly declined over time. Its last resident died in 1930. Today it is an agricultural center with few remaining buildings from its heyday
