National City, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of downtown San Bernardino and shares borders with Riverside to the north and east, and Temecula to the south. The first European explorers to visit what is now National City were led by Captain Gabriel Moraga who diaried about 1769-1770 while imprisoned in Mission San Francisco de Asís. He mentioned a place called Palos Verdes which he supposed might be Inyo Pass but no one could find it so he named it for Lieutenant General Don José Nieto de la Cueva y Costilla who was governor of New Spain at that time. Mexican land grantees began ranching and farming in what would become National City in 1821 when Governor Manuel Nieto granted Rancho Rinconada al Rancho Los Nietos to José María Simón de Anza because it had been claimed by his predecessor Felipe Carrillo y Tejada. When Mexico lost its territory during the Mexican–American War, Alvarado received title to allayer as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which also gave Santa Ana County to America. In 1860 National City became an incorporated town when voters passed an ordinance creating local government without state aid through a system known as initiative Measure W (the "W" being for "We"). On July 11, 1861 Stonington viejo (Old Town) was destroyed by fire started by two men - John Fenton Stonington and Isaiah Bowman - striking sparks from a forge they were using in nearby Uniontown on their way home from work. The resulting blaze consumed more than 100 homes including much ofour original downtown business district Thereafter only single story buildings continued until after World War II when reinforced concrete replaced wood with help from public works funds generated by other endeavors such as Interstate 10 construction nearby

On January 1, 1865, Fremont Street was extended east to Gilroy Avenue and on February 3 that year it became part of downtown National City proper unified with all other parts of the city by ordinance. The original downtown building still stands today - built in 1886 by Neely Richardson - at 415 Sutter Street. In 1894 national CITY acquired land near Glen Ellen which would eventually form the basis for its present day north side district including much of Mission Valley. This agricultural area is now home to many major shopping centers as well as some small businesses and residential neighborhoods depending on what part of town you are looking at when visiting
