It is located on the banks of the Colorado River and is served by National City Unified School District. The first permanent settlers in what would become National City were farmers who arrived in 1849. By 1860, there were over 100 residents and businesses within the present boundaries of National City. In 1863, a small post office was established at what is now called Main Street. The town gradually grew as more people came to live hereabouts and founded schools and businesses. By 1880, National City had 887 residents and 12 stores. In 1912, the towns charter was amended to create an incorporated municipality with a Mayor-Council form of government under which it continued to grow rapidly until 1980 when it reached its current size with 1,521 citizens. The current mayor-council system results from Proposition 209 (the Political Participation Amendment), which passed by voters in 1996 after years of community activism culminating with the formation of Citizens for Change PAC (now Our Community). The amendment defined municipal elections as part of state election laws instead of being conducted separately as they are currently done in most other cities throughout California. As a result, all city council members are elected at-large rather than through wards like they are currently done statewide or locally within each city’s own political jurisdiction – giving every citizen an equal say in how their city functions both horizontally and vertically speaking - making for more efficient decision-making overall while also increasing transparency across local governments that represent all Californians tax payers equally regardless of race or ethnicity

In 1907, following incorporation into Los Angeles County (), National City became its own municipality with a mayor and council it held until 1912 when it was merged into the then newly created city ofLos Angeles. During World War II () many patriotic citizens served their country through military service such as Mayor Stanley Drucker (). After liberation hostilities ceased in 1945,Mayor Drucker spearheaded efforts to redevelop downtown areas such as La Brea Avenue () while also creating new parks like Carthay Circle (); he also helped found the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (). Today many aspects connected with city history are still celebrated annually such as the torchlight parade that takes place on July 4th each year along LaBrea Avenue () and various art exhibits throughout the year at both local museums (such as LACMA)and international galleries ().
