In 1960 the United States Postal Service opened its first post office in National City (then called Sailsbury). It continues to serve as today's ZIP code 85831. On May 1st 1990 Caltrans announced plans to add six new lanes on I-5 between US 101/US 519 and Interstate 15 just east of town but this never came to fruition because local officials opposed it citing fears that it would increase traffic congestion within town limits while also reducing access off I-15 for commuters looking for NCSM art galleries or shopping opportunities nearby
