In 1853, the Grants sold their holdings in National City to Elisha Semon House and others for $8,000. In 1860, the city became part of Mexico when it seceded from California following the Mexican–American War. It was not until 1916 that it regained its American sovereignty as National City. After World War II ended, some citizens decided that they wanted to keep National City as an agricultural center because of its high quality soils and irrigation systems. This led to the development of industry such as fiberglass production and plastics manufacturing during the 1950s and 1960s; however, these industries have since faded away due to competition from other states with similar resources.
