Napa Valley is a appellation located in the central portion of California, just south of San Francisco. The valley formed from the convergence of the Santa Susana Mountains and the Mount Shasta Range. The name Napa comes from two Spanish words - napa-napa meaning “bridge over” and chato-capa meaning “hollow” or “valley.” In 1872, when American explorer John C. Frémont traveled through this area, he recorded that the valley was known as Napa Valley because of its many wine-making properties. The first white people to visit Napa Valley were traders and travelers who journeyed through this region during the 17th century. One such traveler, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, visited Napa in 1542 while on his way to find new land in North America. After reaching Mexico City, Cabrillo sailed back up the Pacific Coast and reported his findings to King Phillip II of Spain. This event led to Spanish interest in exploring this new continent and further trade with Asia began which contributed significantly to development in Northern California. Napa was first settled by Native Americans – specifically, Hupchuck Indians – sometime around 1000 AD. Over time these natives encountered various Europeans who also explored this part of California for mineral resources and trade goods such as horses, cattle, maize (corn), tobacco, cloths and merchandise valued at $2 million per year by 1800 AD! By 1846 however most of present day Napa County had been organized as a result of Mexican land grants given out among various Californio families following their defeat at Battle Of Adobe Hills against United States forces under General Tomahawk Jackson on November 30 that year! The Mexicans soon withdrew from what would become California after Mexico lost its independence from Spain in 1821. However for many years thereafter Anglo Californios continued toclaimed parcels of Mexican land hereabouts although title deeds remain unsigned! In 1847 Jedediah Smith set out with several other explorers including Kit Carson (founder of modern day Colorado) to explore what is now Yosemite National Park after noticing high mountains near Calistoga Creek! He named what are today Tuolumne Meadows (an area east of Redwood Canyon) Nevada Hill after himself and his party while travelling down Tuolumne River along its banks! It wasn't until 1860 when Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about a group camping nearpresent day Donnybrook Reservoir that he correctly identified it as part of today's county! As America grew more diverse both within her borders as well as internationally across seaside settlements like Alcatraz Island off Marin County CA prior to World War II there was increased traffic along Route 1 throughout much rural counties stretching from Sonoma County into Mendocino County allthe way into Placer County .....and even into Yuba County if you include Needles which makes up much recent SUV design district called Soquel Valley? A whole bunch more paper about winegrowing will be necessary but I think we can pretty much say that Napa has been producing quality red wines since before movies like "Gone With The Wind" were ever made!!
