The history of Napa began with Mission San Francisco de Asís and the Gold Rush of 1849. During World War II, Napa was one of the sites where General George S. Patton's Third Army stopped during their march through Northern California to cross the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County. In 1969, Napa became part of the United States when it joined numerous other U.S., Canadian and Mexican towns in becoming an American city by referendum. The first European settlers in what is now Napa County were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1776 from Baja California on horseback under Governor José Peñalosa y Gómez. On July 10, 1847 they founded Mission San Francisco de Asís after landing on Point Reyes Station on Alameda Bay near today's Yountville and Petaluma Counties east of Redding (now Ukiah). In 1848 another group of Spanish priests established Mission Santa Rosa de las Purisima Trinidad south of present-day Sausalito before moving east to establish missions at Petaluma, Tolocco and Monterey Bayou near modern day Emeryville before finally reaching as far north as Fraga Creek at what is today's Rancho Tiburon just north of Half Moon Bay (now Daly City).
