Many large wine estates were developed during this time including those controlled by Patricio De Montero y Saavedra, one of Spain's richest merchants who also served as president of Mexico from 1824 to 1830; Sam Adams Winery; Rheingold Vineyards; McLaren Vale Vineyards; Dry Creek Wines;; Carneros Vineyard;; North Coast Winery;; Stagnocellariwinery;; Praline Cellars.;and Mendocino County Wineries.). The 1850s saw an increase in wine production due to improved irrigation systems, but also increased competition from other sectors such as lumber manufacturing which began arriving around this time with vineyards near Bakersfield becoming very popular for winemaking since trees could be grown close together without damage or pests (the practice known as sylviculture). By 1870 most major wine producers had closed their businesses due to changes within both American society and global economic conditions however some notable names still remained such as Château Margaux (founded 1795), Malbec (1801), Sauvignon Blanc (1837), Roquefort (1861), Zinfandel(1863)), Pinot Grigio (1926)and Nebbiolo(1952).
