When Sam Colt began manufacturing arms in 1847, he had to find a way to get his weapons into the hands of the people who were actually going to use them. The traditional means of distribution for firearms was through saloons and gunsmiths. Colt came up with the idea of creating his own armory and distributing his weaponry directly to civilians. This system worked well for a while, but as the years went on there were more and more gangs and criminals that wanted to get their hands on guns. Construction began on Mission San Francisco de Asís within sight of what is now downtown Sonoma In 1862–63 an event that would have far-reaching consequences for both wine and country occurred when General Joseph Kapp organized a group called “The Sons Of Liberty” which aimed to overthrow slavery in America through violence. This group included James Polk (then President), Andrew Johnson (then Vice President), and others who were determined not just to end slavery but also its spread throughout North America. Their goal was ultimately successful; on November 8,1865 at Gettysburg northwest of San Francisco Kapp's followers were routed by Union troops under Major General Ulysses S Grant during The Battle Of Solano County where more than 200 slaveholders were killed or captured including some high-ranking officials such as Governor Pio Pico and Mayor José Herrera Martinez
The Napa Valley was first inhabited by the Chumash people, who lived in the area from about 8000 BC. The valley became part of California in 1853, when Mexico ceded it to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The valley was named for General Antonio Vallejo, who explored it in 1777. In 1855, John Sutter discovered gold and silver in the nearby San Joaquin Valley, which led to a rush of settlers into the Napa Valley. By 1870, ranching had become an important industry in the valley. The following year saw a huge fire that destroyed most of Sonoma County and much of northern Marin County.
