The history of Napa, California is complex and full of culture, stories, and memories. The area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and was first settled by the Ohlone people. In 1776, the region was explored by Spanish traders looking for new gold fields. By 1821, the winegrowing regions of Napa and Mendocino were established. The first vineyards were planted in 1843 on the south side of the Napa River. From 1868 to 1969, Napa County was created from part of Butte County. The name “Napa” comes from the Muisca word meaning “red earth” or “granite soil.” Roman Catholics founded a mission called Santa Rosa de las Nieves in 1798 on an ancient Native American site in what is now downtown Napa. In 1847, Mission San Francisco began construction on a small chapel near modern-day Sonoma Valley. The church was completed in 1850 and became one of the most important symbols of California during its time as a province of Mexico. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1861, many Californians fled to Mexico City to escape civil unrest there while other sections of California continued to be administered under Spanish rule. In 1865, when Alta California became part of the United States following their annexation into America, portions of what are now northeastern Marin County (northwest Contra Costa County) and western Sonoma County (southwest Marin County) were transferred to Alta California as well as parts of Yuba and Kern counties (east central Nevada). As with most frontier acquisitions during this period, these areas were sparsely populated with few permanent residents until later when miners arrived seeking riches at all costs and wound up displacing many indigenous peoples who had lived here for centuries without resistance or official recognition. In1877 General James Hahn led Ulysses S Grant’s army through Yosemite National Park into southernmost Nevada in order to find goldfields beyond that state’s border – he instead discovered vast expansesplexes covered with dense redwood forests that would become known as Central Valley wine country because grape vines could only grow along steep hillsides rich in sulfurous soils called black earths where temperatures reached 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius) year-round! On October 15th 1870 Hahn re-ëmphasized his old slogan about finding a means whereby Americans could drink English wine like Europeans did: ‘It cannot be done! It is Impossible! We must go back home!’ However within three years after his army enterprising Exploradors had opened up huge new areas such as Rutherford Ravine between Sonoma Mountain/Napa Valley(the intersection today known as Donner Pass), Elk Grove Village/Fremont Street Canyon northcentral Sacramento Valley including east shore Long Beach Peninsula southeast corner Channel Islands entire North Coast including present day Los Angeles Harbor except southwestern corner Bunker Hill Mountains which then included eastern tip Seal Island also west coast Catalina Island northwestern corner offshore islands 24 miles long northwest corner Big Sur Peninsula giantSequoia National Forest comprising entire northwestern extent NF Yosemite 8x8 km map released Feb 6 1955 Map 1
Napa County was first settled in 1846, when John Sutter established the town of Napa on the north bank of the Sacramento River. The county was named for General Antonio Loma, who fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1848, California became a U.S. state and Napa County was included within it. The county seat was at Yountville until 1861 when it moved to Cloverdale because of a lack of population
