Ammo has a long and interesting history in Napa County, California. The early Ammunition company, founded by David Cook in 1855, was one of the first companies to export ammunition to California. Cook also developed the first rifle in the state. From 1860-1870, the town of Napa became known for its wine production and as a center for ammunition manufacturing. In 1865, Samuel Morse established his own ammunition factory here in Napa County. In 1886, a new armory and munitions plant were built in nearby Yountville. In 1907, Al Capone began importing large quantities of ammunition from Europe to supply his criminal organization. By World War I, demand for military ammunition had decreased due to changes in technology and the war itself. From 1915-1917, local gunsmiths produced some of the most famous American arms used during World War I such as machine guns and artillery pieces. After World War I ended, industry declined until it was revived by reloading firm Brownells in 1969 which continues today as Brownells Ammunition Incorporated (BAI). Today’s ammo production takes place at several facilities throughout California including BAI’s facility located outside of Santa Clara Valley; Alameda Ammunition Works near Livermore; Midland Armoury northeast of San Francisco; Winchester Manufacturing Company east of Sacramento; Gold Stone Ammunition Plant south of Stockton; and many more smaller facilities across the state. These factories produce everything from ball bearings to mortar rounds to sniper rifles! In 1886, the company introduced its first revolver – the Model 1A – which quickly gained popularity among law enforcement officers and civilians alike. During World War II, Winchester Ammunition produced munitions for both Allied and Axis forces. In 1945, Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company to form what is now known as ArmaLite Incorporated. ArmaLite continued producing ammunition until 1984 when it was sold to Mauser AG subsidiary Plinkett Firearms Corporation

In the early 1800s, muzzleloading pistols were the only way to fire shot larger than .22 caliber. The first successful rifles using this type of ammunition were developed in 1839 by Captain John Browning and his friend General James Wilkinson. These became known as the “Brownings” because they fired a round with a lead projectile that was about an inch in diameter at a velocity of over 1100 mph (1800 km/h).
