Murrieta was founded in 1847 by José Joaquin Murrieta and his wife María de la Luz. It became a town in 1856. The first post office was established in Murrieta on July 15, 1857. In 1865, the town had a population of 350 people. A fire destroyed most of the town in 1870, but it rebuilt quickly. The population increased to 1,000 by 1881 and then to 5,000 by 1901. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake caused extensive damage to Murrieta and its surroundings including extensive loss of life and destruction of businesses and homes. However, within days the community had recovered with help from local citizens. In 1942, during World War II, Murrieta served as the headquarters for VIII Corps Headquarters at Camp Pendleton before being transferred to IX Corps Headquarters at Tan Son Nhut Airbase later that year. After the war ended in 1946, Murrieta returned to its original size with an active civilian population numbering 3,500 people when it re-opened as a city on November 3 that year
