Murrieta is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 74,936 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County. The city is located on the Murrieta River and is part of the Pomona-Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first target shooters in Murrieta were likely individuals who lived near or within walking distance of an old rifle range that was abandoned by its previous owners in 1906. By 1920, there were several shooting ranges located throughout downtown and east side of town with targets ranging from squirrels to lions full size. There are also many small outdoor Range Ranges still present today including one just off of I-15 that offers clay pigeons and shotgun rentals to visitors! In 1951, two businessmen named Heston and John Whetstone decided to start a new target shooting society called "The Riflemen" which later became "Murrieta Shooting Society". They started out renting space from local businesses on East Broadway Street in downtown Murrieta. The first meeting took place on May 20th 1951 with 12 members! From then until 1967 they only shot at their own club home which served as their clubhouse before moving into larger facilities on Euclid Avenue in 1967. This location would be home for The Riflemen until 1990 when they moved again - this time into their current facility on Elmhurst Drive adjacent to Riverside Elementary School where they continue to host tournaments and shoot matches every year! Since its inception, The Riflemen has donated over $2 million (and counting) towards various gun violence prevention programs across the country! In 2006 alone, contributions totaled over $1 million dollars! In total, it's estimated that more than 240 people have been impacted through NRA programming since 1982!!!

The community also has its own fire department which Dispatch operates out of a building on Main Street which was built in 1960. The town also has its own radio station WKQX-FM which broadcasts from studios located on Main Street.

The City of Murrieta was incorporated on November 5, 1916 as part of the larger city of San Diego and it was part of Imperial County until 1912 when it became a part of San Diego. On October 15, 1961, Murrieta became an independent city and it has since grown rapidly through annexation by other municipalities. The current boundaries were established when the City of Carlsbad annexed neighboring communities including Rancho Viejo which includes much of present-day Murrieta. The history of Murrieta can be traced back to 1868 when postmaster general James Hance sent two surveyors to look for land for what would become Carlsbad Springs. A year later Hance designated a small area east of town as “Murrieta” after his friend General Martin Murphy who had led an expedition against Mexican forces at Yuma River Valley in 1846. In 1916, following incorporation into San Diego County as part of that county's growth and development,murrietas name changed to "San Diegans" due to objections from other cities within the county who saw their names similar to those used by Mexico Cityanners operating outside their jurisdiction Until 1961, all citizens inside theCity limits were subject to local government laws while citizens living beyond its borders were governed by Carlsbad Springs Municipal Districts created pursuant to State law passed during WWI. Effective 1/1/61 all enclave residents within City Limits (within 2nd Ward) voted To secede from Municipality & form their own Assemblies w/ full powers under state Constitution Municipalities dissolution followed on 1/1/1973 thru vote by Enclave Residents within same wards - effective 3rd day In 1975 voters approved amendment creating 4 newmunicipalities: Desert View (incorporating Palm Canyon Village & parts adjacent), Midway Heights (incorporating Cathedral Hills & portions adjacent), North Park (incorporating Mission Heights), & Sunrise Manor (incorporating El Cajon). These changes took effect with first meetingof newly formed cities on 12th Feb 1976 . In terms of demographics; according to 2010 census data% women make up 53%of workforce compared with 38% nationally; % Black or African American makes up 13%, non-Hispanic whites make up 63%, while Latinos make up 8%. Hispanic breakdown also reflects large proportion born between 1980-1989 – 27%. Manufacturing now accounts for only 6%of GDP but jobs account for over 50%of job growth over last decade
Murrieta, California was founded on December 16, 1849 by the brothers John and George Murrieta. The town was named for José Joaquín Murrieta y Ulloa, a Spanish explorer who explored portions of present-day California in the 1770s.
