By 1907, Murrieta had become an important commercial center due to its location at the intersection of two major trade routes: The Embarcadero Freeway (I-10) eastbound and US 101 southbound (later I-5). In 1911, Murphy's General Store became one of the first businesses inside City limits when it opened next door to Brown Bros., which was also one of the earliest grocery stores within city limits. Two years later, Murphy's added a second floor for retail space and began serving customers from outlying areas such as Carlsbad and Encinitas. In 1916–17, Murphy's built what is now known as Town Hall on North First Street adjacent to then-City Hall which served as community center until it burned down in 1984 after being used as prop for local movies beginning in 1936.
