The City of Murrieta is located adjacent to the tiny town of Santa Ana with a population of just over 10,000 people combined. The history of Murrieta stretches back to 1851 when Mexicans who had been living in California arrived here from Guerrero Province in Mexico to help establish ranchos and farms along San Diego Bay. José Murrieta was one such Native American born Californian and he soon distinguished himself as an artillery officer during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After hostilities ended he returned home but decided to stay on his new land, naming it after himself – José murrítica (Juan de la Cruz's Rancho) – which he eventually expanded into what is now known as the City of Murrieta. In 1916, following enactment of Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage within California, many residents chose to move away from then-Republican Orange County because they felt that their rights were being violated there even though they lived outside its boundaries. Many other longtime residents abandoned their homes due either to economic reasons or political switchbacks between parties that followed during those years; however, many property owners decided not sell since they no longer saw any value in moving away from their friends and family members who had already left for greener pastures elsewhere.
