Gun targets have been around in Murrieta, California for over a century. The first target was built by Captain George P. Smith in 1892. Later, the target building and business was purchased by J.P. McNaught and Rufus Fenton and it continued to be operated by them until 1907. From 1907 to 1948, the business was run by Ewing Hodge and his son John Hodge until it passed into the hands of the McNaught family after that. In 1948, Mrs. Jane McNaughten took over control of the business from her husband John McNaughten and continued to operate it until 2006 when it became part of ABCG TARGETS INC., a Target Corporation based in nearby Los Angeles County (CA). The Murrieta Gun Club met on February 14th, 1886 at an oldadobe near current-day Main Street in what is today downtown Murrieta. The original members were: Captains George P Smith (1892), J .P .McNaught (1899), Rufus Fenton (1907), Ewing Hodge (1948),Mrs Jane McNaughten(1948). Captain George P Smith donated a rifle range which was used for target practice outdoors only from 1892-1893; however this range has since been destroyed! The club held its first meeting indoors on October 10th 1893 with Captains Wm C Brownell & A M Tate presiding as officers! In 1896 membership increased to ten men but soon reverted back to eight due to competition from other gun clubs west of San Francisco! To date there are still many active members who participate regularly in target shooting events throughout Southern California! The first successful shot at an indoor trap match took place on November 26th 1896 between Captains G P Smith & Wm C Brownell with Capt’n Ewing Hodge assistin’d w/a shotgun On December 9th 1894 a large game hunt utilizing shotguns resulted in two hogs being taken off Richland Creek within minutes of each other !! On January 6th 1895 four traps were set up on opposite ends of Finelli Field just north of town line In 1898 Capt N Morrison opened up his own Trap Shop about 2 miles south east of town limits This shop remained open until 1911 when he closed down because he could not keep up w/the Competition After him David Rankin started renting space from Morrison so that Rankin’s Traps could continue manufacturing their famous steel traps even tho they couldn’t compete against those made by Morrison When David Rankin retired his traps had all been produced thru “the best processes available” finally closing down permanently on September 11th 1912 It should be noted that both Rankin & Morrison had enormous contributions t o early American Trap Shooting ! Thereafter many local people helped carry on the legacy including Ralph Ferguson who bought rankins traps direct fromDavid Rankin in 1978 jokingly saying “I think I may have gotten lucky … [rankins] didn’t fail me once – I can show you pictures” 1 ). Today there are numerous companies that manufacture Traps such as Deere, Savage Arms, Brownells etc., but none compare to those created by David Rankin !

The Earles kept their firing galleries until around 1860 when they moved to San Francisco. From 1861-1894, riflemen from Company C, 8th Cavalry Regiment used their ranges on the east side of town. In 1892, Captain George Fenton took over command of the company and changed its name to 1st Battalion El Paso Riflemen. In 1906, Captain John Wrenn bought a piece of property adjacent to his range which became known as “Wrenn’s Ranch” and began developing it into a shootability land area for rifleers. He also built a couple of buildings on the property which served as his range and training ground until 1935 when he sold it to Driggs Wheeler for $1,000. Driggs Wheeler continued using the range until 1966 when it was taken over by FirstMarine Corps Ammunition Depot Headquarters (now Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton). In 1978-1979, GunTargetUSA renovated and restored the building which now serves as headquarters for both GunTargetUSA and Marine Corps Ammunition Depot Headquarters detachment (MARCAD).
