Murrieta is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 57,819. It is the county seat of Riverside County. The city was founded in 1887 by miners and their families from Northern California as a boomtown on the San Joaquin River in what is now southeastern Riverside County adjacent to Palm Springs. The name "Murrieta" means "place where cows or other animals graze." Murrieta is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,428 at the 2000 census. It is located on the southern coast of San Luis Obispo County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Murrieta were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party on November 10, 1769. They named it "Las Palmas" after their Spanish captain who had explored the territory some months earlier. In 1821, José Joaquin Cisneros y Montero founded a mission here which became the Mission San Francisco de Asís (1821-1824). In 1851, General Antonio López de Santa Anna established an artillery battery here that served as part of his army during the Mexican–American War. After Mexico's victory over Texas at Palo Alto on June 12, 1852, Santa Anna ordered his army to cross the border into California and march through Murrieta toward Stockton in order to take possession of that city. However, before they could reach there they were stopped by American forces under Commodore John Dutton at Monterey Bayou east of town on December 1st. A force including artillery was sent across bayou to skirmish with Commodore Dutton's force but without result; soon afterwardGeneral Lopez arrived with reinforcements and drove them back across bayou without loss or damage inflicted upon either side." Two years later another detachment under Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton attacked and destroyed Mexican forces besieging Fort Tejon southeast of town on February 14th while supplies were being unloaded from an American ship anchored offshore; this event helped win Ulysses S Grant’s support for General Antonio López de Santa Anna against Californios during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The fortifications around town were rebuilt in 1855 following a campaign led by Captain Floyd Wilson (1812-76) which destroyed all but one block of adobe walls outside the original mission buildings; since then most development within town has taken place within its boundaries: primarily inside Mission Plaza where recent commercial activity has been centered since federal funding for redevelopment began flowing in earnest in 1984." López de Santa Anna died here January 25th 1850 aged 83 years old and was buried in La Mesa Cemetery near downtown Murrieta while many believe he may have been poisoned at nearby Rancho Los Alamitos Adobe where he had been living since early January according to local legend.(See notable people associated with Rancho Los Alamitos Adobe.) At least three other members of his cabinet also died surrounding him including Agustín Lara Simón who managed Dos Pinos Palace before becoming President of Mexico City(December 8th 1861 – May 3rd 1865), Mariano Osorio Gasset who served as Foreign Minister from 1830 until his death due to yellow feverOctober 9th 1850 – February 15th 1852)and Manuel Michelini who held several high posts throughout Sonora before becoming Governor general Augusto Carrillo Herrera’s assistant adjutant generalMarch 23rd 1860 – October 5th 1862)."

Murrieta was founded in 1876 by brothers John and David Murrieta. The town's first post office was opened in 1877. It grew rapidly due to the railroad being built through the area, and a number of businesses were established including a flour mill, bakery, grocery store, hotel, and school. In 1907, Murrieta incorporated as a city.
