Murrieta, California is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 94,898 at the 2010 census. Murrieta is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Southern California. It has a population of Latinos (of any race), Asians, African Americans, and whites. Hispanic/Latino households outnumber white households by more than three to one. The history of Murrieta can be traced back to 1846 when Captain John C. Frémont discovered gold near present-day Murrieta and named it for his father General Antonio José de la Guerra y Costilla y Valdés who had served as governor of Alta California from 1785 to 1800 under Governor Manuel Micheltorena. La Guaira Pointe was also named after him because he employed many Spanish soldiers on his rancho there during the gold Rush days. In 1861 when Mexico became a republic following its victory over France in the Mexican–American War, Captain George Wills took possession of what is now Orange County and established Rancho San Fernando Rey de las Palmas y los Arroyos Anglo American section east of Mission Bay on land that had been part of Alta Californias missions including Monterey Peninsula and today’s Claremont Colleges campus area including Carlsbad Caverns National Park portion which bounded Ventura County on the south side while parts of Los Angeles were still annexation territory from Mexico (See map below). In 1872 Don Enrique Pico acquired Rancho Santa Ana del Norte from Captain Wills and built a small adobe courthouse here in 1873 known as the courthouse annex or Pico Building although no building remains today other than foundations which are surrounded by modern pavement parking lot measuring 350 feet wide x 350 feet deep with an asphalt surface measuring 100 feet wide x 30 feet deep at its widest point along with about 1 acre (.4 hectare) fronting Pacific Coast Highway between Via Linda Vista Street & Jurupa Valley Boulevard eastward from bounds set by Mexican grantee Presidio San Francisco de Borrego after conquest by Ulysses S Grant Butler bought title herein December 9th 1874 having previously acquired Rancho Santa Anita ejido thenceforth including coastal areas adjacent thereto lying northwesterly along shoreline defined thereby easterly within year priorsee map above boundaries then surveyed April 2d 1875 being entered into public record February 5th 1880 1st marker: oldMissionBay Road intersection now part of Camarillo College campus 2nd marker: present-day Pico Building intersection 3rd marker: Jurupa Valley Boulevard intersection with Via Linda Vista Street 4th marker: ocean view road crossing just east of Camarillo College campus

Murrieta is a small town in Orange County, California. The population was 5,397 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of San Diego and adjacent to the city of Tijuana on the Pacific Ocean. Spanish settlement began in 1821 when Rancho Viejo de Baja California was granted to José Joaquin Cisneros by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. In 1835, Juan Noriega purchased Rancho Viejo from Cisneros for $5,000 and renamed it Rancho Murrieta. In 1850, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort near present-day Murrieta after arriving in California with his family from England in 1849. The first post office was established at Murrieta on December 22, 1850. In 1861, following the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Spanish settlers east of San Diego removed without warning or compensation and placed into concentration camps under harsh conditions known as "The Great Migrant Deportation." Of the original 740 residents of Rancho Viejo de Baja California only about 60 remained by 1863 when most had been forced westward into Colorado Territory through what is now Mesa Verde National Park. Most of these Californios returned home after a few years but some continue to reside in Oceanside today as well as parts of Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Joshua Tree National Park which are also within easy driving distance of Murrieta. In 1869 Mexican president Porfirio Diaz issued Executive Order No.–2 which repealed sections 3 and 4 of Executive Order No.–1 that had banned polygamy among Mexicans living north of Mexico City; this order resulted in an estimated 100 headless corpses being found along Interstate 10 between San Bernardino and Chico during that year alone! Enraged citizens burned down several businesses including one owned by Don José Cabrera who continued to run a grocery store until his death two years later at age 83! By 1870 there were no more Spanish settlements remaining south or east of Mexico City so ranching operations switched to Anglo farmers who began raising livestock such as horses and cows while still providing subsistence for their families back East. A post office called "Murrietas" was established at nearby Otay Mesa on April 17th 1865 (the date given on official records), just six months after President Johnson signed Executive Order No.–6 creating American Samoa offshoot American West Coast Island territory comprising portions of modern Ventura County including part now located inside Corona del Mar!! After Ulysses S Grant became President he vetoed another executive order passed by Johnson ordering Arizona be withdrawn from Union because its inhabitants were not white! This incident led Tochita rancher Pio Pico setting off an eight day Rampage starting February 12th & culminating March 2nd leading up to what would become known as The Battle Of Corralitos which ended with about 20 Americans dead +/- 14 Mexicans!!! # murrietas # otaymesa
Murrieta was founded in 1853 by Don Jose Murrieta and his wife, Maria de la Vega. The town was named for José Francisco Murrieta, who had been the first European to settle in the area. It became a city on November 15, 1909.
