Murrieta, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Victorville, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Murrieta has been inhabited by Native Americans for nearly three hundred years and was founded in 1848 on the Rancho San Diego de Alcalá Mexican land grant to José Joaquin Mora y Valdez. In 1851, it became part of California during the Mexican-American War when US troops burned down the mission there. Murrieta’s first post office opened in 1850. The town was named after General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had died in Mexico City while trying to cross into United States territory. The discovery of oil in Kern County in 1901 led to increased development around Murrieta and other townships within Kern County as well as elsewhere across southern California due to hydraulic fracturing (fracking). As production increased, air quality deteriorated and numerous water wells were polluted with gas and oil production chemicals such as benzene and ethylene glycol which can cause leukemia, lung cancer, birth defects and other health problems. In 2014–2015, protests against fracking took place throughout Southern California over fears that it could contaminate drinking water supplies with toxins from shale formations used to produce oil and gas reserves
Murrieta is located in Riverside County, California. It was founded by Mexican Americans in the 1840s. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of its location on the San Joaquin River. In 1915, Murrieta became known as "the most bilingual town in America."
