Murrieta is located on the southern border of Riverside County and adjacent to Orange County. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The area now known as Murrieta was first inhabited by Ohlone people who were hunter-gatherers for most of their history. They traded with Native Americans and fishermen from Yuma Lake. In 1835, Mexican land grants were made to families that included José Maria Aguirre and Manuel Nieto, two of the founders of Riverside County. The grantees named their town after Diego Rivera, one ofMexico's leading painters during this time period. Rivera started living in Murrieta in 1881 when he moved from nearby Mathersville to help start what would become Southern Pacific Railroad's first line through Orange County. He became friends with local ranchers such as John Sutter and Charles Wolkowitz, who also owned land in Murrieta. In 1886, Rivera married Emma González y Cerrone (1863-1943), an activist who worked for women's rights and social justice issues throughout Latin America during the early 20th century. During World War II, many Japanese Americans lived in or near Murrieta because they were forced into internment camps along the American West Coast following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 (). After the war, many Japanese people left Murrieta for various reasons including education opportunities available in North America or finding work after being discharged from military service (). Some community members still retain some connections to Japan that include usingJapanese words specific to their culture such as "konbu" () which means "rice" in English). In 1952, murierta annexed portions of both nearby Santa Ana City (then known as Anaheim) and Yorba Linda City (then called Glendora). That year saw a major interchange at I-5/State Route 95 when Interstate 5 was completed southward from Exposition Park across California into Arizona Territory; eastern Riverside County followed shortly thereafter (including parts of today's Jurupa Valley). Murrieta is a city in Monterey County, California, United States. The population was 27,553 at the 2010 census. Murrieta is located on the eastern side of Monterey Peninsula and shares borders with Salinas to the east and Pismo Beach to the west. The area that would become Murrieta was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. The first European to visit what is now Murrieta was Manuel Nieto in 1795. A year later Gaspar de Portolà explored and mapped much of what would become Monterey County. In 1802, José Joaquin Guadalupe Vallejo gained Rancho San Pablo from Spanish Missionaries after finding it lying empty near present-day Salinas. Vallejo named his new rancho San Miguel de Allende after King Philip IV of Spain who had given him land grants for his colony in Mexico City Bay Area; also known as Alameda or Bay View Valley because of its location on an overlook overlooking downtown Mexico City. In 1836, Antonio Luna founded La Unión Borracha fruit packing company which became one of Northern California's leading fruits packagers for over 100 years until Buena Vista Fruit Company took over in 1978. Many early residents of Murrieta came from Northern California: pioneer Jens Nielsen arrived in 1840 from Denmark; Gustavus Vail came from Sweden (then part of Norway) in 1849; John Fenton arrived about 1850; and George Chaffin arrived about 1860. One group that did not come from outside Northern California were two Germans: Johann Nepomuk Erdmann and Wilhelm Hoferbothn who bought 160 acres (70 hectares) near present-day Salinas in 1859 but never moved there permanently because they could not afford the costs associated with farming a new land grant.; A post office called "Murrieta" was established at this time, but no mail ever got sent there due to lack of infrastructure at the time (). In 1870 Juan Rodriguez founded Los Angeles & Nevada Railroad which connected Santa Fe Springs with Los Angeles via Stockton so passengers could go north to Sacramento or south to San Francisco (); however this line was abandoned within a few years due to economics reasons unrelated to climate change ().
