Murrieta, California is a town in Riverside County, California. It is situated on the east side of San Bernardino Mountains and is about 22 miles (35 km) southeast of downtown Los Angeles. As of the 2010 census, Murrieta had a population of 98,074 and an area of 51.2 square miles (158.8 km2). The community was named for General Mariano Vallejo, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first ammunition plant in Murrieta was built by John A. Roemer & Sons in 1875. In 1876, J.A., Roemer & Son became part of Browning Arsenal Company and continued to produce ammunition until 1922 when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to become Winchester Armory Corporation. The company also produced shotgun cartridges and rifle bullets under its own name until 1926 when it was purchased by Remington Arms Company which renamed it Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation again in 1970 before selling it to Browning Firearms Corporation in 1987 which renamed it Browning Ammunition Corporation once again before finally shutting down in 1992.

It is located on the eastern edge of Riverside County and makes up part of the larger city of Riverside. The town is bordered by the cities of West Covina to the south, Fullerton to the east, and San Bernardino to the north. Murrieta's ZIP code is 92536. The area that would become Murrieta was first settled by Tohono O'odham people in 1847. After Spanish missionaries arrived in 1849, they founded Mission San Gabriel de la Laguna (later known as Mission San Gabriel Arcangelista) near what is now Murrieta Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. Mission Santa Ana de los Angeles was established two miles east of present-day Murrieta in 1851 and became an important cultural center for Southern Californians who were attracted to missions’ religious teachings about baptism by immersion for salvation through Jesus Christ. In 1881, when Riverside County was created from parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties, Murrieta became one of its first townships. In 1907–1908, Jens Christensen began construction on what would later become his legendary Anaheim Hotel; it opened in 1909 and remains one of Anaheim's most iconic landmarks today. Rancho Niguel land that would later be annexed into Irvine was acquired from local ranch hands under patent granted on November 3rd 1888 by then-Governor Jones providing for such acquisitions as this: "No person shall purchase or possess any Land within said limits without express written consent from all interested parties." On December 12th 1889 additional patent numbers 868 and 869 were issued covering 640 acres (247 hectares). This grant provided for irrigation rights on some rancho niguel land which had been donated by Pancho Villa prior to his March 1911 uprising against Mexican President Porfirio Diaz which led to Mexico annexing those lands including Rancho Niguel along with many other rural areas across southern California during wartime conditions following World War 1 auctioneer Wm Hemenway estimated at $2 million more than prices offered at public meetings surrounding platted boundaries thus creating what we now know as Disneyland Park adjacent to adjacent agricultural land parcels adjoining Menlo Park bounded by Olympic Boulevard/Parkside Drive/Alameda Street/Wangley Road

It takes its name from Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who explored parts of California during the 16th century. The first European to visit what is now Murrieta was Alonso de Portolà in 1769. On November 5, 1821, Mexican land grantee José Joaquin Mora y Acosta discovered and named this area San Bernardino County after his father General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's victory over Mexico at Monterrey on November 4 that year. It wasn't until 1853 when an American surveyor named George Hahn discovered oil wells off the coast of California that began production for America's first commercial company - Comstock Oil & Gas Company - which would later become Texaco. The town of Murrieta was founded byuvans who had come down from Mount Whitney to work on drilling rigs and other equipment owned or leased by ComstockOil&Gasco.* By 1875, there were over 100 businesses and 800 people living in downtown Murrieta*, although most everyone worked for the local companies that did business out of their homes or trucks parked along Main Street*. In 1905, as part of a plan to rid Southern California of mosquitoes (at that time malaria-carrying) two US Army officers set up field hospitals near Encinitas and started vaccinating residents against yellow fever with live chicken eggs mixed with rice bran solution (to make it harder for them to get hold of the blood). After successful vaccination campaigns throughout much of Southern California* (*including parts now known as Orange County), General Pershing ordered all Americans west of Texas be vaccinated against dengue fever before they left for Mexico* (*this order includes much today's Riverside County*) so that we wouldn't fall victim to this deadly virus while traveling through those areas*. On September 15, 1907 President William McKinley signed Executive Order 10886 authorizing construction within certain boundaries – including present day Murrieta – of a new interstate highway system.
