It is the ninth most populous city in California and the second most populous city in Silicon Valley after San Francisco. Mountain View was founded on October 15, 1912 as a small town named Sunnyvale with a population of 100. It grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to the military and research facilities located there. In 1957, it became an incorporated city.
