The first Mayor pro tempore was Jens Christensen from 1912 until his death in 1915; later Julius Rosenwald served as mayor from 1916 to 1931 The development around Googleplex began soon after its founding in 1994 – most notably in 2004 when Sergey Brin (then just 25 years old) moved into his current home on Donahue Avenue adjoining Google's campus across Donahue Boulevard from then-City Manager James Karmazynskyi’s house on Potrero Hill: “You could see him walking down Donahue Boulevard and he would always stop and look up at Googleplex because it looked so big. He just loved it there." In early 2005 Google bought land adjacent to its main campus for an $8 million research park that will eventually include 100 buildings housing laboratories focused on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, natural language processing and other advanced technologies

Mountain View was founded in 1884 by James K. Polk and his wife, Anna L. Polk, as the city of Santa Clara. In 1906, the city annexed part of Palo Alto and became a consolidated municipality with that town. The City Council passed an ordinance establishing a school district on November 15, 1912, which served as the basis for Mountain View's current public school system. In 1917, World War I disrupted attempts to establish a community center in Mountain View because many people who had contributed to its construction were called into military service; however, plans to build such a center resumed after the war ended and were completed in 1919. On July 1, 1922, the City of Mountain View annexed its neighboring unincorporated communities of Menlo Park (to the south) and Atherton (to the north). These annexations created separate municipalities but shared an overall police force until 1933 when they each formed their own police forces. Finally on January 1, 1949 all three municipalities merged into one with Mapleton as its seat; Mapleton would become an independent village later that year.
