Mountain View, California, is a city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It was founded on October 25, 1879 by James K. Polk and his Secretary of State John C. Fremont as the junction of Telegraph Road and Stockton Boulevard. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the edge of Silicon Valley and its proximity to Stanford University. In 1923, Mountain View became an incorporated town with a Mayor-Council form of government under the terms of Proposition 8 which repealed Prohibition in California. The city's population reached over 100,000 by 1945 but peaked at 200,000 in 1960 before declining steadily over the next few decades. In 2018, Mountain View was announced as one of five finalists for Google's newtowns initiative which will provide $20 million for urban redevelopment in areas around their current headquarters campus in downtown Mountain View.

Mountain View experienced major growth following World War II when it became one of the largest military installations in California with more than 60% of all Navy ammunition needs handled here; until then ammunition had been transported by ship or train convoy through other parts of our state while still being stored off shore awaiting shipment to belligerents around the world. In 1951, Mountain view joined together with nearby Milpitas and Sunnyvale to form Silicon Valley which continued experiencing rapid growth throughout the decades leading up until today – responsible for many innovations that have made Silicon Valley what it is today including Apple Inc., Facebook, Googleplex and hundreds more tech startups over the years!
