Mountain View is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 census. It is the eighth-largest city in Silicon Valley and the largest city within its borders on the Peninsula. The City of Mountain View was incorporated on April 25, 1887. The first known inhabitants of what would become Mountain View were Native Americans who lived along today's western border of San Francisco Bay. In 1826, Juan Bautista de Anza discovered a route to India over the top of Mount Diablo and named the area Fort Ross after his headquarters at that location. By 1860, many families had moved to Mountain View from eastern San Francisco due to its warm weather and growing agricultural industry. A year later, a group of businessmen led by George Hastings purchased land northeast of town for $10 per acre (2 hectares). Hastings named his new community Grantown-on-Hills after General James Hanchett of California fame who had helped organize American troops during the Mexican War. Hastings was soon joined by other businessmen in developing this area which became known as Hillsborough Heights during their early days as developers. By 1870, most residents in Hillsborough Heights had left for Grantsville or Livermore because of economic reasons and competition from Newark and Menlo Park northward in Santa Clara County (the precursor to Silicon Valley). Grantown-on-Hills remained an agricultural village until about 1908 when it began to develop into what are now downtown Mountain View and much of El Sobrante County east of Highway 101 near Novatoagus Boulevard/SR 805 (then part of Utopia Road) between 1901–1907 when Ridgecrest Drive was built south off SR 805). Most development took place on hills overlooking Grantown Villageincluding Hillcrest Residential Area developed between 1906–1911 by developer Edward Fenton(Fenton & Sons), now home to Palo Alto University; Kerr Avenue Business District developed 1915–1920 by entrepreneur John Leland(Leland Company), now part of Apple Inc.; redwood forest west side developed 1916–1920 by developer Arthur Ashe(Atkinson Ranch); Castro Street/First National Bank building erected 1917; Richardson & Richardson Nursery School erected 1919; Storey Adobe No.: 2 built 1920; Hotel Crystal Palace constructed 1922; First National Building added 1928; present day University Avenue/Googleplex avenue built 1939.) During World War II (1939–1945), much housing was built for military personnel barracks located near Google campus including Barracks East #1 – now part of Google Campus North - adjacent acres originally used for agriculture before conversion into barracks served as Camp Roberts which housed more than 10,000 men plus their families from 1942 until 1945 outfitting them with uniforms and amenities such as kitchens and baths while they were deployed overseas across various theaters including Europe then Japan then China etc.).
