The history of firearms in Morro Bay began with the early Spanish settlers. In 1769, Captain Francisco de la Robles landed at San Luis Rey with a small group of men and women. The first European guns were used by natives to hunt game, but soon guns were needed for defense against Indian raids. In 1821, the Mexican government granted land to Juan Bautista Alvarado in Morro Bay for a military post. Alvarado built a fort on the bluff overlooking the bay and named it Fort Point after his friend and mentor, Commodore George Vancouver. The fort was used as a harbor for maritime trade and as a military base against Native American attacks during the 19th century. During World War II, Morro Bay was one of several locations where United States troops unloaded munitions onto beachheads in North Africa and Europe. Ammunition shortages caused many civilian deaths when unexploded ordnance killed or injured residents living near military sites. In 1959, California’s Proposition 65 became an law requiring all Americans over age 25 to have permits to possess handguns or rifles in their homes state-wide. This law led to an increase in handgun ownership among civilians in California, which also contributed to advances in shooting protection history here at Morro Bay. Gunownership rates have declined throughout most of California sinceProposition 65 became effective in 2009; however, gun violence has continued to decline statewide since then (though it remains high across most U.S., including California). Morro Bay, California is a small town located in Sonoma County, California. The population was 2,596 at the 2010 census. Morro Bay is part of the Petaluma- befriend-Napa Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's name comes from Spanish for "black rock" or "point of land." The first people to live in Morro Bay were the Chumash people who arrived about 15 years ago. They built their villages on either side of Point Conception (now known as State Route 1). Today, there are only a few Chumash living in Morro Bay and most of them are buried in the springtime sand dunes around Point Conception. The first Europeans to visit Morro Bay were Captain John Fitch and his crew when they sailed up the coast from San Francisco on July 29, 1826. They sighted what they thought was an island but it was actually Point Conception which they named Fortunato after Admiral Lorenzo De Gasparri's flagship, that had been lost off Cape Horn two years earlier. In 1849, Daniel Burnham called Morro Bay "the best harbour I ever saw" because it had good water supply and access to both calm and stormy seas. However, this harbor did not become popular until later because it was always filled with foggy weather making navigation difficult even during dry periods. During World War II there was heavy bombing raids against Morro Bay by U-boats which caused extensive damage including loss of lives and destruction of homes and businesses. In 1945 Japanese forces abandoned their positions at high tide near Ptarmigan Spit while withdrawing from Leyte Gulf following the Battle of Leyte Gulf. As a result of this event local fishermen began using Ptarmigan Spit as their landing ground for fishing boats whenever there was rough weather offshore so that larger vessels could not enter or exit the bay easily during bad weather conditions like these - something that still occurs today! inhabitants: 2,596

The large granite wharf that dominates downtown Morro Bay has been a landmark since its construction in 1906 by City Engineer Cesar Chavez Sr.. As one of only a few communities on San Francisco Peninsula with an active waterfront commerce district older than 170 years, Morro Bay has preserved much of what made it an important port before containerization began replacing inland commerce in the late 20th century.
