Morro Bay is a small, isolated town in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is known for its Morro Bay National Monument and the Morro Bay Bridge. The first Europeans to explore and settle in this area were the Spanish in 1795. In 1821, a group of Englishmen founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on a point near modern-day Morro Bay. The mission was abandoned in 1824 because of an outbreak of smallpox that killed many missionaries and settlers. In 1827, Juan Bautista Alvarado discovered oil reserves at Morro Bay and decided to build an oil rig there to extract the fuel from the sandstone beds underlying the bay. The rig began production in 1830 but quickly ran out of fuel and stopped operations due to bad weather and competition from other rigs drilled nearby. In 1839, José Joaquín Carpintero used his gold mining skills to establish a small refinery at Cabrillo Beach on Isla de la Juventud for extracting gasoline fromCalifornia Gas Oil Company wells located offshore). However, this venture failed as well because it took too long to get gasoline flowing through pipelines across California's rugged landscape; by 1840 only about 6 barrels per day were being produced statewide from these wells combined with those at Monterey (now part of Silicon Valley). In 1850s two brothers named Augustus Granville Dowling started developing land east of Morro Bay along what is now State Route 1 for use as citrus orchards and dairy farms; their property became known as Dowling Heights after them.
